Garlic Bread on the cheap OR Other uses for Hot Dog Buns

We like to pick up packages of hot dog buns when they're selling real cheap in the summer and fall and put them in our freezer. That's around 50 to 89 cents a package.
And we like to have about 3 packages in the freezer at all times.... because they're so handy.
For quick meals.
Now- with that said- we don't use them for hot dogs. For some reason, the hot dog buns just aren't up to snuff for holding hot dogs after they've been frozen. They're kinda stiff- but they're still useful!
We like to make poorman's pizzas
and homemade garlic bread.

Poorman's Pizza
Individual serving size
1 hot dog bun, split open
pizza sauce
mozzarella cheese
pepperoni

Place open bun on small baking sheet, slather with small amount of pizza sauce OR if you're really cheap or trying to be frugal and use up some stuff- use spaghetti sauce in place of pizza sauce. Top with shredded cheese and four slices of pepperoni (or other favorite pizza toppings you have on hand). Broil for approximately 2 minutes or until cheese is melted and lightly browned.
You can also make this in the oven- 350 degrees for approximately 10-12 minutes or until cheese is completely melted and lightly browned.
4 Cheese Mostaccioli Bake with homemade garlic bread on the side
Homemade Garlic Bread
1 pkg of hot dog buns
butter
garlic salt
Italian seasoning
Gently tear hot dog buns apart and butter inside of each bun slice. Place face up on small baking sheet. Sprinkle with garlic salt and Italian seasoning. Broil for approximately 2-3 minutes or until golden.
*Variation: We like to add a couple pinches of shredded mozzarella cheese to the top of each bun slice.

Yum! We like our "poorman" version of garlic bread way better than the store bought version.

Of course, you can make both of these recipes with hamburger buns too!
And another favorite family use when we have extra buns is to make French Toast from them!

  1. Awesome! I so do this, too! I even try and entice my kids to eat PB&J on a hot dog bun!
