Homeschool Mother's Journal for October 10-14

In my life this week…
Painting, painting, painting. The house is almost done and I am ever so grateful for all the help from our friends. This job was way bigger than I could have imagined. We’ve spent every week nite for two weeks painting and every nite someone comes over to help. We’re sharing meals and thanking God again and again for our treasured friends and family.

In our homeschool this week…
Has been chugging along… Due to painting, we had a bit of a scheduling snafu and Ms. Books ended up with a science test and a math test in one day… whoa! But she persevered and did well. We built in a “catch up” day at the end of the week for all the bits and pieces that got swept aside this week and last because of the painting. So very thankful we did that. So very.

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…
We are overthetop pleased with Teaching Textbooks 7 for Sassafras. It was an expensive change but well worth it. Very well worth it.

My favorite thing this week was…
Watching Mr. Conductor work diligently to rake a huge pile of leaves for jumping in. Just for jumping in.

Things I’m working on… Being flexible. Homeschooling gives us the unique advantage of tailoring our schooling to our family needs and family schedules. The weather has been ultra perfect for painting these last 2 weeks and we have needed to take advantage of that. I needed to remind myself that it's okay to tweak the schedule and if every little bitty thing doesn't get checked off it's okay. As long as we're covering the basics, it's okay. It really is okay. Not getting to our hands-on projects for the week- okay. Actually- we just traded them for a really big hands-on project... painting a large 2 story house. They are learning still, just a bit differently. Mr. Steady said the other day, "It's okay. They're learning. They're learning the value of hard work and that's better than algebra."
[Edited to note: I'm even being flexible with Blogger- who seems to want to do quirky things to this post today...]

I’m grateful for…
Flexible schedules, this glorious fall weather and our friends and family who have given up night after night to come and help us paint.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…
Sassafras and a friend taking a painting break... on the roof:

Have I mentioned how much I love homeschooling? Oh, I do.
And from our history studies- a really interesting video on Pompeii.

  1. Oh, painting can be exhausting! But look at the kids on the roof, taking a break! LOL LOVE the color of the house. Did you paint the outside as well?

    Stopping by from THMJ!

  2. Love the colors and the pic with the reading on the roof - lol.
My 13 yr old heads to no place without a book in hand ;)

  3. Flexible schedules = GOOD!!! We take a BIG spring and fall break and school in the heat of the summer. I feel a tad guilty reading all your homeschooling posts while we are out catching caterpillars...but not too guilty!

  4. I'm glad you have plenty of support in this painting endeavor. Love the picture. :)

  5. Sounds like you have had a crazy couple of weeks! I love the picture of the kids on the roof. What a great memory for them!
